job

·       In the current economic climate, many people find themselves looking for a job.

·       You may be tempted to grab the first job offer that comes your direction, even if it does not line up well with your long-term aspirations.

·       I have personally found myself in this position, looking for any job that would pay more than I was currently making rather than looking for a meaningful position that would help me continue working toward my aspiration of managing large groups of people.

·       If you are currently unemployed, you are in a more vulnerable position, and it will be even more difficult to stay the course toward your long-term goals.

·       There are several problems with casting a wide net and taking whatever job you can get:

o   Your résumé and background will not support most of the positions you are applying for.

o   Your attitude toward your job search will be sour, and that attitude will come through in your interviews.

o   You will waste lots of valuable career time searching for and working in jobs that do not meet any of your career goals.

·       When looking for jobs, honestly ask yourself if landing a particular job would help you reach your long-term career goals.

·       If the answer is no, move on and try something else.

  • Join me next time to get some pointers on getting and nailing the interview for your next meaningful, career-enhancing job.

selfcon

·       Self-confidence is a key component of a successful personal brand.

·       Your self-confidence, or lack thereof, impacts your brand in many ways.

·       Self-confidence—positive impacts:

o   If you exude self-confidence, you make great first impressions on those you meet, which goes a long way in helping you immediately establish your personal brand among professional peers and superiors.

o   Self-confidence equips you to handle challenges and adversity, which will make you a standout among your less confident peers.

o   Self-confidence makes it easier to establish credibility in professional settings, which can make negotiations, new business generation, and problem solving easier.

·       Lack of self-confidence—negative impacts:

o   Making a poor first impression can kill your shot at a new position and at closing a business deal.

o   Your ambitions may be diminished if you don’t believe you have what it takes to earn a certain level of achievement or accomplishment.

o   You may fall into self-blame when you face adversity, and that blame will thwart your desire to rise above the competition and earn recognition.

Without the proper level of self-confidence, you will not be able to establish a personal brand that will move you up the ranks and help you achieve your aspirations.

aspiration

  • A major component of my Fresh PASSION methodology for personal branding is aspiration.
  • Today I’m going to share how I define aspiration and steps you can take to find yours.
  • Aspiration, as defined in my book Fresh PASSION, is really a two-part entity: it is something that must be found and then realized.
  • In order to find your aspiration, consider the following questions:
    • What am I passionate about?
    • What skills do I have that can be used to attain the thing I am passionate about?
    • Am I determined to make this happen?
  • The potent combination of passion, skills, and determination makes up your aspiration.
  • Passion: You aspire to do something you truly love, not something you think will lead to wealth or an easy work schedule.
  • Skills: You have all the capabilities, both innate and learned, needed to make your aspiration come true.
  • Determination: You have the tough, focused mindset necessary to fully commit yourself to achieving your aspiration, even when the odds are stacked against you.
  • Going through this process will help you fully flesh out everything you want to accomplish with your life. You can narrow down your aspiration to something that will truly bring you happiness and keep you motivated to succeed.
  • How does this all link to your brand? Knowing your aspiration will allow you to tailor your brand to that aspiration.

Without a personal brand, you don’t have a career… you only have a job. When you are a ‘generic’ individual, there is only so far you can go in a given job, and it’s only a matter of time before you’re replaced. If you develop a dynamic personal brand, however, you differentiate yourself from your competitors and become a force to be reckoned with. Nothing will keep you from personal, economic, and professional success.

If you want to attract the perfect job, the perfect career, or the perfect business opportunity, you have to start with your personal brand. This interview is a great place to start.

negativity

  • You can choose where you want to work, what you want to do with your life, and how you want to get there, but you cannot choose who you will be working alongside once you get there.
  • You are going to encounter negative people along the way, but you can equip yourself to deal with them in such a way that you actually benefit from the experience.
  • Below are some common negative experiences you may run into in your professional life and the benefits you stand to gain from handling them well.
    • The tyrannical boss: Teaches you how to stay on your toes and deliver results in the most difficult of circumstances
    • Lazy coworkers: Force you to shoulder larger workloads than you thought you could handle, and therefore increase your bandwidth for future projects and positions
    • Overly demanding customers: Instill in you reserves of patience and diplomacy you never knew you possessed, which will continue to serve you as you progress in your profession
  • What negativity have you encountered at work? Were you able to turn it into a positive? Share your experiences below.

brandpower

Whether it’s Starbucks, Nike or the Java Hut at the corner, just about every company has its own specialized brand these days. The way Michael D. Brown sees it, it’s time you had your own as well.

The author believes the “power of the brand” — in this case your own personal brand — can help you land that dream job, win a coveted promotion, or move from a dead-end job to one of fulfillment.
By branding, Mr. Brown means emphasizing the personal qualities and skills that make you stand out, the things you can do better than anyone else, and how they can deliver for your prospective employer or your new boss.

Just as there’s little variation in a Big Mac (so well branded we don’t even have to mention the maker), personal brands must be consistent so that people know what to expect and demonstrate a proven track record of delivering results, he said.

After all, a Big Mac is delicious every time, right?

The last thing you want to be, he said, is a “generic.”

boa

  • It is very rare that people succeed without support and input from people around them.
  • You don’t have to and shouldn’t “go it alone” in building your brand; rather, you should identify and recruit people who will help you make it happen.
  • I call this group of people your “Branding Board of Advisors.”
  • You will call on this group to advise you, guide you, be frank and honest with you, and lift you up when things get difficult.
  • They will be an invaluable resource and support system as you refine and build your personal brand.
  • Below are some useful tips on choosing your own Branding Board of Advisors.
    • Seek out branded experts, especially ones who have achieved success in the areas in which you are aspiring to compete.
    • Make sure they are smarter than you are. If you are always the smartest person in the room, you’re not feeding your success—you’re feeding your ego and going nowhere.
    • Get a commitment—ask them if they can be passionate about your success, believe in you, understand your brand, and be willing to give unselfishly.
    • Ask them what you can give in return. This is possibly the most crucial building block for your board. You must be genuinely willing to provide an equal commitment to anyone who joins your board.
    • Don’t be afraid to make changes to your board if you feel like you are not staying fresh and growing with them.

freshpassion

Fresh Passion is a good motivational book because it doesn’t only give you the concepts that would inspire you; it also features worksheets, self-assessment portions and other practical tools that help you visualize how you can you create and promote your personal brand that will help you stand out in the crowd.

I recommend this book not only to professionals and businessmen who want to excel in their respective fields but to everyone who wants to come up with the best version of his or herself.
